Photo! Editor, previously known as Photo Toolkit, is a basic retouching tool with which you can fix and optimize your digital images in a couple of clicks.

Photo editing features

The most outstanding feature of this photo editor is its seamless integration with Windows Explorer, which means it adds a whole new command group to image file context menus. These commands enable you to launch Photo! Editor's main tools straight away, without having to open the program first.
As for the tools included in Photo! Editor, it's a pretty basic program. That said, Photo! Editor works perfectly fine for small retouching tasks such as optimizing colors, removing red eye or even clearing someone's skin of spots, wrinkles and other slight imperfections. Other tools included are a resampling/cropping utility, some really cool light effects and a caricature tool to apply a hilarious morphing effect to your photos.

Flawed browsing

The only drawback to Photo! Editor is that there's no way to browse the folder's contents using thumbnails. This means that if your photo file names are not descriptive enough, you'll have to click on them one by one just to find out which picture they correspond to.

Outdated look and features

Although Photo! Editor provides easy access to tools for fixing red eye, enhancing color, and even creating caractures, they still feel very basic. The interface is where the app falls flat, as the design is very dated, where as free apps like Picasa continue to evolve.

Overall

Photo! Editor is the perfect choice for those who are looking for a simple, lightweight and easy-to-use photo editor to fix their digital images.

Notes

Photo! Editor is the new name of Photo Toolkit.

Photoscape is an amazing free photo editor. It includes so many filters, tools and special effects you'll find it hard to believe it's actually free.

Full of features

Photoscape includes just about everything you need to view, optimize, edit, print and have fun with your photos. In fact, it's so complete that many would call it a free Photoshop alternative. Sure, it's not quite up to the level of Photoshop, but it's truly a great alternative to Adobe's big shot - and it makes photo editing a lot more fun!

Easy to use

From the program's main window you can choose what you want to do: view pictures, optimize those that didn't come out so well, print several photos on a single page collage-style or perhaps add any of the dozens of filters and special effects included in the program.

Smart interface

One of the first striking elements in Photoscape is its uncommon interface design. The application is very striking and in many ways it's easier on the eye than Photoshop.

Conclusion

There's really nothing negative to say about Photoscape. Just download it, test it, love it and keep it forever. It's free!

Windows Live Movie Maker is essentially a simple, easy-to-use video editor that helps you put together photos, videos, music and special effects to create an eye-catching presentation in a few easy steps.

Features

Being part of the Windows Live Essentials suite, Windows Live Movie Maker has to be installed through the Essentials package installer. Also, bear in mind that this version only works in Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Usability

Windows Live Movie Maker is dead easy to use. All you have to do is import the photos and videos you want to use, select the background music and add some titles and end credits if you want. The program displays extra buttons on the title bar that gives you access to configuration settings for video, music and text respectively. As regards effects, you also have plenty to choose from: transition effects, animations, zoom and pan, and also visual effects that will spice up your images.

Quality

When your video is finished, you can save it in different formats and sizes, depending on where you plan to use it on: computer, high-definition TV screen, mobile device, instant messaging client, etc. Windows Live Movie Maker also includes the option to upload it directly to YouTube, Facebook, SkyDrive and Flickr. The only drawback is that Windows Live Movie Maker saves videos to one single format: WMV.

TogetherShare Data Recovery Free is data recovery software that restores all types of files (documents, audio, video, emails, etc.) that have been deleted from the Recycle Bin or deleted as a result of formatting, a virus, or after your computer has crashed. It also allows you to restore disk partitions.

Retrieve your deleted files and disk partitions...

If you've lost, damaged or deleted PC files, then the damage might not be permanent. In fact, as long as the space that was occupied by the files on the hard drive has not been written over, there is still a chance that they can be recovered. TogetherShare Data Recovery Free helps you to retrieve your missing files. The software allows you to recover your documents (Word, Excel, PDF etc.), emails, pictures, audio and video files. You can select the disk(s) to be scanned as well as particular files. TogetherShare Data Recovery Free also enables the retrieval of the contents of a disk or disk partitions.

...in three steps

For each of the three types of restoration that on offer (restoration of lost files, full recovery and restoration of a partition), a wizard guides you step by step through the recovery process. You can select the type of files to be restored in order, select their location and then select the results to be saved and their destination folder. All this is done quickly enough, but obviously depends on the size of the drives and folders that you scan.

Bring your missing files and partitions back to life

As with all data recovery software, TogetherShare Data Recovery Free can't work miracles. It can be very effective if you're trying to recover files or partitions that have been lost, damaged, or deleted only a little while ago, but if you wait too long, there is a strong likelihood that you will no longer be able to retrieve your files as they will have already been overwritten by others.
TogetherShare Data Recovery Free is, however, very easy to use and is definitely worth a look to try and recover those vacation photos you deleted by mistake...

If you want to play video or music files in just about any format, VLC media player is probably your answer.

Features

Version 2 ("Twoflower") brings a new interface, faster decoding, support for more formats and the ability to play HD and BluRay. It still remains however the most stable, flexible and lightweight audio and video player around today. While other media players will play unusual formats after downloading a codec, or simply refuse to play things,
VLC media player handles tons of formats, from MPEG to FLV and RMBV files. Version 2 has seen some important additions too such as support for 10 bit codes plus multi-threaded decoding for H.264, MPEG-4/Xvid and WebM.
Also useful is the fact that you can use VLC media player to preview files you are downloading since it plays incomplete parts of video files. VLC media player is not just for video playback however. It also offers superb integration with video channel streaming services such as Channels.com giving you access to channels such as ESPN, Reuters and National Geographic. Just right-click or CMD-click on the playlist, select Services Discovery and Channels.com.
Channels.com will then appear in your VLC media player playlist. Click on it to reveal the the different categories of channels available. Click on the category you want and a drop down list of all available channels appears in VLC media player. Just click on the channel you want to watch and streaming should begin almost immediately.

Usability

VLC media player also has great hotkey support and if you take the time to learn the shortcuts so it can be controlled without touching your mouse. If you're watching DVDs or video files through it, this is not an issue. For music, it plays more or less any file and features an equalizer and playlist creation. VLC media player isn't as intuitive as iTunes as a media manager, but it's a much more flexible player in terms of file formats. You can even use VLC to convert your files, and on top of all the formats and physical media it will play, many streaming protocols and TV capture cards are supported.
VLC media player makes it easy to add subtitles to your video files too - just add the SRT file to the folder where your video is kept, and it will automatically play with subtitles.
Finally, the interface in VLC media player has been somewhat improved in version 2 although it remains strictly functional. However, you can download skins to completely change VLC media player's appearance. The preferences menu is comprehensive without being overwhelming, and there is extensive documentation online.

Conclusion

VLC Media Player is quite simply the best multimedia application for Windows and Mac. It plays just about anything, hassle free - what more could you need?

What's new

Rework and fixes of the Mac OS X interface
Fix Pulseaudio initial synchronization
Fix MKV, SWF, AIFF and subtitles demuxer crashes
Translations updates and new Welsh translation
DVB-S delivery system detection
Fix audio and video track selection through libVLC
Fix system sleep issue on Mac OS X 10.5

VLC media player supports the following formats

MKV, WMV, MPEG, MP4, MOV, AVI, DIVX, XVID, FLV, FLAC, WAV, REAL, VOB plus many more

There are several proxy extensions for both Chrome and Firefox but few work as well and as simply as ZenMate. ZenMate encrypts and routes your internet traffic through a proxy in a different country so that you can surf the internet more privately. It also enables you to circumvent Geo-restrictions which prevent you viewing content that is normally blocked in your region.

Free during launch with Pro version planned

ZenMate is a new proxy extension that's easy enough for anyone to setup, works immediately and is free to use. Although ZenMate is free to use, in the future a the developer plans to release a Pro version with a subscription fee but the basic version will remain free.

A pleasure to setup and use

Like most Chrome extensions, installing ZenMate is extremely easy. Once you've clicked install in Chrome, you simply have to enter your e-mail address to activate ZenMate. You don't need to enter any activation codes or click on any e-mail links although it is questionable why a service which claims to allow you to surf anonymously requires any e-mail address at all.
ZenMate sits in the top-right corner of Chrome and turns green when you are protected. To administer it, just click on the green shield. What we really liked about ZenMate is the ability to switch between a countries instantly. By default, your internet traffic is routed through Switzerland but you can change it to a UK, US or German proxy instantly. There's virtually no delay in connection time and ZenMate does an excellent job of ensuring your surfing speed stay more or less the same. However, we did experience some slow-downs when streaming video but not enough to be a pain.

A very promising proxy add-on

If you want to use services such as Hulu, Netflix and Pandora outside of the USA, then ZenMate does an excellent job. As regards how much it can genuinely protect your privacy, there can be no guarantees but ZenMate claim to take privacy issues very seriously. On the downside, the number of country proxies supported by ZenMate is very few although it's likely more will be added as ZenMate develops. In summary, along with Hola Unblocker, ZenMate is one of the better proxy add-ons out there.

Notes

Clicking download will take you to the Chrome Web Store where you can install this extension (you must be using Chrome to do this).

YouTube Center for Firefox lets you use YouTube in the most efficient way, with lots of features which greatly enhance your user experience, including a feature to prevent buffer blocking.

Pause the video: a tried and tested method ...

YouTube is a streaming service, so until a short while ago, to avoid interruptions during viewing, you would have to pause the video to let it buffer and load completely before being able to watch it without pauses and interruptions.
YouTube, however, has recently changed its streaming system. The new Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) no longer allows this "trick", since it only loads individual "blocks" of streaming at a time. As a result, pausing a video will only load the corresponding block and not the whole video.
This is a significant problem for those who love streaming videos on YouTube but have a slow connection. It can be solved, however, using YouTube Center for Firefox.

YouTube, your way

YouTube Center offers a lot of functionality. The main one, as we've just mentioned, is the ability to go back to the old buffer system and load the entire video by pausing the player.
The plugin also adds some features to the player, including: the ability to change the aspect ratio of the video (4:3, 16:9, 24:10), the use of a repeat button, resize functions for the player, and a button to dim all other content on the screen so that you can focus your attention solely on the video.
YouTube Center also includes functions to change skins and colors of the player, enable / disable annotations (the interactive popups that sometimes appear on the video) and remove banners, watermarks and ads. It also offers features to auto-expand the description of the video and the ability to see the maximum resolution from the preview (thumbnail) and the likes / dislikes for the video.

Pure practicality

Next to the login button, you'll find a gear icon which gives you access to the YouTube Center control panel. There you'll find a multitude of options to modify your user experience on YouTube. The features are divided into categories. For those who are a little more technically-minded, there is a redirect to the manufacturer's website that explains the features briefly.

An essential plugin for YouTube fans

The YouTube Center plugin is truly amazing. It dramatically improves the user experience of the video portal and lets you change every aspect of YouTube according to your needs.
Among the many functions available with the extension, the most interesting is the one that allows you to restore the old buffer system for loading. In short, it's an essential plugin for those who spend hours on YouTube.
